Why The Knights Offer Insurance

In 1873, while seminarian Michael McGivney was studying for the priesthood, his father, Patrick, passed away. Without the financial means to continue his education, Michael returned home. Fortunately, he later received assistance from the Diocese of Hartford, allowing him to complete his studies and be ordained a priest.

Less than a decade later, Father McGivney witnessed another family facing a similar hardship. After the death of his father, Edward Downes Jr. left the seminary to help support his widowed mother and twelve siblings. Although Father McGivney could not change that family's circumstances, the experience strengthened his resolve to create an organization that would care for Catholic families in times of need.

When the Knights of Columbus was founded in 1882, Father McGivney envisioned an organization where Catholic men would support one another and ensure that widows and children would not be left without financial security after the loss of a husband or father.

In his own words, he sought to:

"Unite the men of our Faith... that we may thereby gain strength to aid each other in time of sickness; to provide for decent burial, and to render pecuniary assistance to the families of deceased members."

That mission continues today. While the world has changed since 1882, the need to protect families remains the same. The Knights of Columbus continues Father McGivney's vision by helping eligible members protect their families and prepare for life's uncertainties through financial protection rooted in Catholic values.
