Youth Protection Requirements

The Supreme Council has instituted a process of formal background checks on all adult leaders who are in direct contact with young people in Knight of Columbus sponsored activities/organizations.  Adults who serve in Squires, Scouting Units, or manage sports teams sponsored by Councils, Assemblies, or Auxiliaries must complete a Youth Protection form (Form #4348) and submit it to the Grand Knight who will then forward it to the State Deputy.

These background checks are in addition to any performed by Diocesan or Scouting organizations.  There is no cost for these checks to the council or the individuals.  Please be diligent and protect the good name and reputation of your Council and more importantly protect the young people to whom you minister!

Links to the downloadable forms, Form #4348, are available on the State Council website, http://www.mokofc.org.  Questions should be directed to the Supreme Advocate’s office at (203) 772-2130.

COLUMBIAN SQUIRES & COLUMBUS GIRLS
The Purpose of our Columbian Squires and Columbus Girls is to provide our young men and ladies an opportunity in life for Leadership training, Spiritual and Moral Guidance needed to succeed in our world today.  A Catholic Organization, which recruits those young adults 10-17 years old who, are willing to continue their faith while learning Leadership Skills and Character building which will help them both in High School and College.  We have four standing committees: Spiritual Activities, Service Activities, Circle Activities and Membership Activities.  Each must plan, organize and complete at least four programs during the year.  Service Activities get them involved in our community. Spiritual and Membership are involved around our Church and bringing in new members.
The Circle Activities conducts programs for members to get to know one another better as friends.  Its primary purposes are to promote brother hood and fellowship through social and athletic programs.
It is also responsible for fund-raising and public relations.   Each circle must run its own activities and control their circles financial health and budget.

We teach them the 10 Attitudes of leadership.

  1. Interest and Leadership  - Let them know you really want to attain success.

  2. Sincerity  - Be honest and frank

  3. Seriousness  - Set the pace for the work which needs to be done

  4. Consistency – Maintain a sense of controlled urgency.

  5. Expect Excellence – Always keep goals just one step ahead of your achievements.

  6. Spiritual Motivation  - develop a source of future leadership for the Church.

  7. Understanding – Win and maintain confidence during a time of turmoil in many youth

  8. Patience – with mistakes in judgement and know how to criticize constructively

  9. Wisdom – A good leader quietly meets the spiritual and material needs of his followers.

  10. Sense of Humor – Being able to laugh at oneself, and knowing how to laugh with others

We need Knights and Ladies to come forth and help us to recruit and start a circle in your area to continue to grow our circles.  Our Future Leaders are just waiting for us to get them started and a chance to prove themselves.  Please call me and lets get a Circle going this year in your area.   We need to have our Youth more visible and involved.

Substance Abuse Awareness Poster Contest

2007-2008

This program, now in its tenth year, is one of the most popular youth activities offered by the Knights. Structured along the same lines as the Essay Contest program, this contest gives young people the opportunity to develop and showcase their own solutions to one of the most serious issues facing adolescents today. By communicating using their own language and images, participants increase the level of awareness among their peers on the dangers of substance abuse, while also providing positive, reinforcing messages that you can be drug and alcohol free and still be popular. Councils can use this program as part of their schedule of youth and community activities, attracting visibility not only to the problem of substance abuse among young people, but also to the Knights of Columbus as an organization committed to doing something about it.

The Knights of Columbus Substance Abuse Awareness Poster Contest has three levels of competition: Council, State, and International, with winning entries progressing through the various levels until the International winners are selected. There are two divisions of competition: an 8-11 year old division and a 12-14 year old division. SUPREME’S RULES STATE THE POSTER SIZE MUST BE 11” X 17”.

A Substance Abuse Awareness Poster Contest can be fun and easy to conduct. First and foremost, be organized! The council Youth Director, in consultation with the Grand Knight, should appoint a chairman to administer the contest. THE CHAIRMAN’S FIRST RESPONSIBILITY IS TO ORDER THE SUBSTANCE ABUSE POSTER KIT FROM SUPREME (Form# SA-KIT). This should be ordered in early fall, and will contain all the necessary materials for the contest. The chairman and his committee should coordinate all phases of the contest: organization, judging, prizes, etc. They should contact all schools, public and private, in the community to publicize the contest. The support of teachers and administrators is very important, and meeting with them early in the school year is helpful. They, and especially young people, as well as law enforcement and substance abuse counselors can serve as judges, along with the committee.

To be considered for State level competition, I must receive the four winning entries from your Council by February 29, 2008.
