FAMILY OF THE MONTH PROGRAM

Family of the Month Application

The purpose of the Family of the Month program is to recognize the outstanding families of your Council

who have been active in the Church, Community, and Council activities of the local council plus other

involvement in the local community. The family - husband, wife and children - should exemplify an involved,

active, religious Catholic family. How do you select an outstanding family? Councils have expressed concern

about singling out a specific family for this award. While each Council has numerous outstanding families,

there is plenty of opportunity to recognize each of these families when participating in the program over a

period of years.

THE GRAND KNIGHT WILL RECEIVE A NOMINATING FORM

ABOUT ONE MONTH BEFORE THE DEADLINE

ENTRIES. The Council should select the Council’s Family of the Month and have the Family Life Director

of the Council work with the family in completing the nomination. Guidelines are explained in the Family

of the Month program booklet, which each Council’s Grand Knight receives. This booklet is supply number

1933-nc and available at no charge from Supreme.

~ The Council should honor the selected Families of the Month at a Council event. Present the Family with

the "Family of the Month: certificate, item #1843 from Supreme for 25 cents each. Ideally, the Council will

also select a Family of the Year from the monthly winners, and honor them at an awards dinner or social.

Present them the "Family of the Year" certificate, item #1843-A, for 35 cents each. Finally, send a picture of

your "Family of the Year" to your local newspaper along with an article listing your family’s

accomplishments. This will give your family the recognition they deserve.

Each family selected as State Family of the Month will be presented a beautiful plaque by the State Council

and all entries will receive a certificate. The State Family of the Year will be selected from the monthly

winners and honored at the State Convention while attending as guest of the State Council.

SUPREME RECOGNITION OF FAMILIES OF THE MONTH

Each month during the fraternal year, Supreme draws 100 names from those family names entered on the

appropriate form, which is contained in the Supreme Program Booklet, which Grand Knights will receive.

This drawing, on the 15th of each month, awards Holy Family plaques along with a letter of congratulations

and appreciation from Supreme Knight Carl Anderson.

In summary, our local councils should recognize our greatest asset ~ OUR FAMILIES ~through involvement

in the Family of the Year Program

"The Christian family is a communion of persons, a sign of the unity of Father, Son, and

Holy Spirit. It is a domestic church - a community of faith, hope and charity"
(Catechism, par. 2201-2206)

The Missouri State Council recognizes the importance of the family in all aspects of the Knights of Columbus

and therefore has designated the first weekend of June as Knights of Columbus Family Weekend. Our State

Deputy proclaims this weekend.

Every council is strongly encouraged to plan family activities for this weekend. Our goal is to celebrate

our family unity, share our time with each other and gather to worship as one family.

Knights and their families should consider:

  1. Attending Mass together followed by a family breakfast.

  2. Special devotions to honor Mary our Mother and Patroness of the Order.

  3. Sponsoring educational programming for families at the council level and invite the whole community.

  4. Participate in special family social activities such as picnics, reunions, camping, hot dog & marshmallow  roasts,

hay rides, sporting events or trips to the zoo.

FAMILY COMMUNION SUNDAYS
(FIFTH SUNDAY OF THE MONTH)

What better way to promote the Knights of Columbus family than to regularly celebrate Sunday Mass together.

Worshipping with the Parish Family on Sunday is essential to our faith health. Go together, pray together. All

councils should make this a regular part of their family activities. It is a time when we can remember our deceased

members and their families who are a very important part of our continued success.

Things to consider:

  1. Have the Honor Guard participate by leading the procession into Church.

  2. Have the names of the deceased members printed in the parish bulletin and read at Mass during the                                                                                 general Intercessions.

  3. Say the rosary as a group prior to Mass and serve as Eucharistic ministers, lectors, servers, and ushers.

  4. Have members of your council and their families greet the parish family as they enter church and thank                                                                         them for coming to share and celebrate this special Mass.

  5. Provide coffee and doughnuts afterwards in the council or parish hall.

SERVING GOD’S FAMILY

Our Order, our state council and our local councils participate and donate a tremendous amount of money to                                                                 many worthy causes, but also donate the valuable time and resources needed to programs where God’s family                                                                        can be served.

Why not:

  1. Adopt a family, widow or widower from your council or community.

  2. Stay with the home bound so the rest of the family can have a few moments to unwind.

  3. Visit your family and others in nursing homes.

  4. Assist the handicapped and elderly with attending Mass or shopping.

  5. Bring Communion and pray with the sick when they can’t join you at Mass.

  6. Promote and support family programs in school, the parish and community.

KEEP CHRIST IN CHRISTMAS

Continue to use the Religious Christmas Cards offered through the Knights of Columbus and mail them with

the Madonna with Child stamp during the holiday season. Use the proceeds from this fundraiser to help make

some family’s Christmas a little more meaningful or contribute to the parish giving tree program.

FAMILY SUPPORT

The Fourth Commandment: Honor your father and mother. It is a great challenge but a blessing to raise children

today. Families today need all the prayers and support they can get to grow strong as one and remain united.

Respect is an important ingredient for a successful family.

HONOR DECEASED KNIGHTS

We bring comfort and aid to our families of departed Knights in their time of sorrow. We should acknowledge

their contributions to our Order. These Knights and their families should not be forgotten and can be remembered

in special ways.

  1. Have Masses said for deceased members.

  2. Pray the Rosary for deceased members at your council meetings.

  3. Present the family of deceased member with 3rd or 4th degree Memorial plaques available from suppliers                                                                 listed in the Supply Catalog.

  4. Present family of deceased member with Resolution of Condolence (item #1450, 35 cents each).

  5. Place Knights of Columbus Grave markers on deceased members graves on Memorial Day and other                                                                     appropriate times of the year. Available in suppliers listed in Supply Catalog.

  6. Invites widows of deceased members to all council activities.

  7. Maintain a 3rd or 4th degree Honor Roll Plaque of deceased members in your Council hall.

SUPPORT OF FAMILY ORIENTED PROGRAMS

As leaders of our communities and parishes, we, as Knights of Columbus must be at the forefront of implementing

family programs. We must lead by example. Our programs become real when we are actively involved. From

conception to death, our family programs can affect an enormous amount of people. We touch the lives of others

through Birthright, Pro-Life, Red Cross, PTA, Boys and Girls Scouts. Plan your work in these areas and then work

your plan.

SUMMARY

One family serving the kingdom of God. Bonded in faith, hope and love our families will be recognized for our

service to others. Our efforts will reap great rewards for our individual family, the council family, the parish family,

and our great Knights of Columbus family.
